REVIEW TERRY MCMILLAN GETTING TO HAPPY

Terry McMillan Getting to Happy

Review:

At one time I was seriously intimidated by well seasoned authors. Notice I said, "well seasoned" authors as anybody who writes something has authored it; doesn't make it good. Terry McMillan is a well seasoned author which is why it behooves me that if she thought her characters were board when it came to talking about splitting wood, why she would think her readers would not be bored reading about it, too? C'mon Terry! As a huge fan, I actually ran out to purchase Getting to Happy when I first saw it advertised not realizing that it hadn't even been released yet. Talk about disappointed which is how I'm feeling about this book. I suppose when we raise our expectations too high, we have only ourselves to blame when they fall short.

While this book was superbly written and I'm talking literary excellence, penning a novel is really all about the story! Reading Getting to Happy was like eating cornflakes without the milk. I was not enchanted by it!I know you like to keep it real, Terry but I can get real in the real world. When I read a novel, I expect to be swept away to enchated places where the characters live happily ever after, or get something they've always wanted, leaving behind the real world. Otherwise, what is the point? I can hear beauty shop drama every Thursday! Getting through Getting to Happy was like stealing through a yellow light. You don't stop only because you just want to get it over with and move on to the next light or book. Damn...
